Starting from 1st February 2021, law 238/20121 has introduced a new uniform model for long-term residence permits. While the form has changed, the permit still grants the permanent right to stay. However, there is a crucial update you need to be aware of.

By 3rd August 2023, those who still hold the old model of residence permit must request a replacement or update. This is due to the new amendment outlined in Article 9 of the TU Immigration, which states that long-term residence permits issued for over ten years before the entry into force of law 238/20121 are no longer valid for legal residence in Italy.

To avoid the risk of losing your permit, it is essential that foreigners with a long-term residence permit issued for more than 10 years request an update. You can do this by visiting the Italian Post Office and completing the necessary kit to be sent to the Police Headquarters.

Please note that you should only update if 10 years have already passed since the release date of your permit.

Stay informed and ensure your permit remains valid. Act now if you fall under these criteria!
