No More Passport Stamps: Europe’s New Digital Border System Is Here

Starting from April 10, 2026, the European Union has fully launched a new digital system to record entries and exits at its external borders. It is called the Entry/Exit System (EES) and it officially replaces traditional passport stamps. This system applies to non-EU citizens traveling to the Schengen Area for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Why this system was introduced

The goal is to make border checks:

• faster

• more modern

• more secure

It also helps prevent overstaying and reduces the use of fraudulent travel documents.

How it works

At your first entry into the Schengen Area, you will need to provide:

• your passport details

• a facial photo

• your fingerprints

This information is stored in the system.For future trips, border checks will be quicker because your data is already registered. At some airports and border crossings, you may also use self-service kiosks to complete part of the process.

What changes for travelers

With the new system:

• passports will no longer be stamped

• entry and exit dates and locations are recorded automatically

• it is easier to track how long you stay in the Schengen Area

When it started

The system was gradually introduced from October 2025 and is now fully operational as of April 10, 2026.
